How do you prepare for a bone density test?

A bone density test requires very little preparation. You should not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before the test, but you can otherwise go about your daily routine. When you arrive for your appointment, avoid wearing anything with buttons or zippers that will obstruct the scanning area.

What can you expect during a bone density test?

The amount of calcium and other bone-supporting minerals in sections of bone in the hip, spine, or forearm is measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DXA, a sophisticated type of X-ray technology.
